EQUATORIAL Guinea has been announced as the host of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations tournament following the withdrawal of Morocco.
Morocco withdrew after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) refused to give in to the north African country’s call for a shift in the date over fears of Ebola outbreak elsewhere on the continent.
Confirming the choice of Equatorial Guinea as the host of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations on Friday, a statement by CAF said that the president of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, had met with CAF president Issa Hayatou earlier in the day with regards to the hosting.
With Equatorial Guinea’s acceptance to host the tournament on schedule (January 17-February 8, 2015), the country will now participate in the tournament despite the team being disqualified in July for fielding an ineligible player in a preliminary qualifier against Mauritania.
As sanctioned by the Executive Committee of CAF, the Equatorial Guinean cities of Malabo, Bata, Mongomo and Ebebiyin will play host to the 2015 AFCON finals.
The draw for the finals will hold on December 3 in Malabo after the conclusion of qualifiers on November 19.
