The Falconets’ star to the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women World Cup in Canada, Courtney Dike, has explained why she rejected all the match bonus payments at the tournament, insisting playing for Nigeria was more rewarding for her family than the money.
The Oklahoma State University student rejected the $7000 paid to her by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for playing for the country at the 2014 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.
The Oklahoma Star football team player who scored the fastest goal in the competition’s history against South Korea and also got the curtain raiser in the Falconets’ win over North Korea in the semi-final felt receiving her bonuses was not necessary because representing the country was enough reward for her.
“I would like to respond to what I have been reading on the internet about rejecting bonuses,” she wrote in a mail.
“I am delighted to play for Nigeria whenever called upon. I knew before leaving for the U-20 World Cup that I would not accept any bonuses. Acceptance of prize money is against NCAA regulations (the division 1 collegiate governing body) here in the US, so that is the main reason for rejecting it.
“Knowing this beforehand, I still chose to represent the country because I believed the experience would be more valuable than the money, and I was right.”
