We all know that TV money in football is getting more and more powerful.
The TV companies can choose when they want a specific fixture played and they also pay each club a whole ton of money in order for the privilege.
However, in the Premier League the divide is relatively equal as each side gets shown on TV a similar amount of times over a season – with a little bit of an advantage to the bigger sides. Yet in La Liga, Barcelona and Real Madrid earn as much as £48m more than the top sides in England from TV rights.
Perhaps that is why English sides are beginning to struggle in the Champions League, as they simply cannot keep up with the big guns of Spain.
At least the Premier League is becoming a more rounded competition. Using last season as the comparison, the lowest any team got paid from TV rights in the Premier League was £60.8m, compared to just £14.1m in La Liga. Quite incredible. How are the lesser sides in Spain ever going to catch the top two? Simply put, they won’t. There just isn’t enough interest in Spain for the lesser sides in the top division.
