All-Africa Games qualifier: Dream Team beats Gabon 4-1

Eaglets feast on Zambia, qualify for World Cup

The Dream Team VI started the campaign for a place in the men’s football event of the 2015 All-Africa Games on a brilliant note with a 4-1 trouncing of Gabon in Libreville, on Saturday.

Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan’s Junior Ajayi scored in the first minute of the match played at Stade Augustin Monedan a Sibang before Warri Wolves FC striker Etebo Oghenekaro increased the tally from the penalty spot two minutes to the end of the first half.

Ajayi maintained his knack for quick starts with another goal in the 47th minute, but Gabon pulled one back through Axel Meye midway into the second half, but Nigeria ensured a handsome advantage going into the second leg when Enyimba forward Peter Onyekachi made it 4-1 in added time.

Members of the Nigerian community in Gabon made a good presence and cheered the Dream Team loudly at the stadium.

The return leg will take place at the National Stadium, Abuja, on Saturday, March 7.

At the ongoing African U-17 Championship in Niger Republic, the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria defeated their Zambian counterparts 3-1 to lead the Group A table with seven points and consequently qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup holding in Chile later this year.

The Guinean U-17 team, though lost 1-2 to Niger Republic, bagged the second World Cup ticket with four points. Nigeria will play the runners-up in Group B in the semi-finals, while the Guineans will face the group leaders.
