Saturday, January 31, 2015 is one day Oladapo Oyebanjo better known as D’banj, won’t forget in a hurry. It was the kick-off party of his year-long celebration of his 10th year anniversary as an entertainer. The event held at Oceanview, Victoria island, Lagos, with a great ambience, impressive set up and fantastic decoration as well with. With Amber Rose, announced about two weeks earlier as host already in town since around the evening, the party would have been truly jaw dropping but for a few areas which mirror the event in negative light.
The party started very late
As expected from a regular Nigerian party, show or concert, premieres and even meetings as the case maybe, the party at Oceanview started very late. In this case actually, it started super late. Billed to kick off at 7pm, it didn’t start till 12:30am when the man and his American guest sauntered into the venue.
What did Amber Rose do?
As earlier advertised, American model and twerk queen, Amber Rose was meant to host the show and her fans here in Nigeria had also anticipated that she’ll surely show off some of her amazing twerking skills while in the world’s most populated black nation. Well, she broke our hearts. Amber Rose didn’t twerk for us and she only managed to spend an incredulously inadequate 7 minutes on stage. And no matter how you see it, you are left with the question: What did Amber Rose really do while here? She arrived the venue at 12:35am and came on stage by 1.40am for the first and only time. And she really didn’t say or do anything remarkable apart from learning how to dance ‘Shoki‘.
Despite paying N20k, people had to stand all through
For the party, tickets were in 3 different categories. Regular tickets sold for N20k while VIP sold for N500k as tables went for as high as 1m. For those that bought regular tickets, you’ll get 2 vouchers of 3k each to have cocktails but sadly there’s no table or chairs for you and you had to struggle with your cocktail standing through the event.
Lack of flow in the event was very visible
It was a party as D’banj called it and not a show or concert so not much was expected in terms of event flow, coordination or even performance. However, the party still lacked a proper flow and seemed largely unorganised, as many things related to the event. The party anchor, Jimmie did a great job with doing a lot of damage control but for an event of such magnitude, the flaws were all too visible to a regular event attendee.
You can’t ignore the media
Like someone recently submitted, D’banj behaves the way he does because he has a warped representation of the size of his brand. As a huge brand, D’banj should have gone far beyond the stage of shunning the media and treating pressmen with utter disdain. Knowing the celebration of his 10th year anniversary as an entertainer would surely attract huge media attention would have been a good way to start. And before now, D’banj and other showbiz stars would always make table reservations and VIP invites for mainstream media houses. This time, however, media houses didn’t even get press passes let alone VIP seats at tables thus several entertainment journalists were missing at the event....
