Third-tier side Preston North End jumped out to an early lead against Premier League giants Manchester United in the FA Cup on Monday thanks to a goal from left back Scott Laird.
Preston ended up losing 3-1, but Laird didn’t come away empty-handed. His grandma, Pat Smith, still gave him £1 for scoring.
“Every time we scored as kids, she used to give me and my brothers a pound,” Laird told BBC.
Laird, now 26, played 216 games and scored 20 career goals for Plymouth before moving to Preston in 2012, where he’s since scored 7. He’s up to £27 now.
Laird said his grandma was the first person he called after the game to collect his pound.
“I tried saying I wanted a bit more because it was against Manchester United, but she says that wasn’t in the contract,” said Laird.
The question is what does he do with the pounds when he gets them? Does he spend them or does he stay true to form and keep them in a shoebox? Either way, Laird is going to keep the tradition going.
“It’s something I’ll be going on with until the end of my career.”
