After weeks of sustaining suspense, the much publicized AKWA 2016 was unveiled to the general public on Friday, April 22nd at Nigerian Union of Journalist (NUJ) Press Center, Uyo , Akwa Ibom State. The aim of the unveiling ceremony was to formally introduce the Akwa Ibom Watch Awards to the entire Media Industry in Akwa Ibom State.
AKWA 2016, meaning 'Akwa Ibom Watch Awards' is a two- category awards designed to celebrate outstanding performers in various spheres of life. The unveiling ceremony, chaired by the Akwa Ibom NUJ Chairman Elder Patrick Albert, had in attendance the General Manager of Atlantic FM Engr. Ekaete Ekaete, ace broadcaster Eddy Ekpenyong, Police Public Relations Officer Mrs Cordelia Nwawe, the representative of the State Security Service, the Producer of The Bridge TV Show Itoro Columba and Special Assistant to Governor Udom Emmanuel on Media Mr Essien Ndueso.
In his speech, the progenitor of the awards Emmanuel Godwin (Emma Solution) emphasized the need to single out the few who have been selfless in the discharge of their duties. From his explanation, ' Akwa Ibom Watch Awards 2016 is a two-category awards (Merit and Excellence) aimed at celebrating and promoting excellence and dedication in service across both the public and private sectors in the state.
According to him, the event, which is supported by the Akwa Ibom State chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists and endorsed by the Akwa Ibom State Government is slated to hold within the Democracy Day Celebrations period', he stated while taking guests on a rundown of the 35 subcategories of the award.
After the unveiling of award plaque by Elder Albert, the dignitaries took turns to express delight over the initiative by Emmanuel Godwin led Akwa Watch Media team which comprises of carefully selected media practitioners.
Ace broadcaster Eddy Ekpenyong who also doubled as the representative of the Director General of Akwa Ibom Broadcasting Corporation was elated over his appointment as Chairman of the College of Adjudicators and spurred by the decision of the organizers to stick to professional standards in the selection of nominees for the awards.
The PPRO Mrs Cordelia Nwawe expressed her joy over the vibrancy of the media industry in Akwa Ibom and the warm reception by the people on resumption of her duty as the voice and face of the Nigerian Police in the state. This she noted is evident in their passion for excellence in service, having kept tabs of events around Akwa Ibom State in the last one (1) year of the present administration.
Common in the statements made by the dignitaries is the identification of a herculean task before the organizers of AKWA2016, following their commitment to ensure that the award is not given to the highest bidder.
