10 things you may or may not have known about new Super Eagles manager Sunday Oliseh. read them below...
1 Sunday Oliseh was born in Ojota Lagos in 1974; his father is a business man, while his mother is a staunch Catholic and a retired business woman.
2 He played for eight clubs during his career in Europe. They are Juventus, Ajax, Borussia Dortmund, Bochum, RFC Liege, Reggiana, FC Cologne and Genk.
3 He retired from active football with Genk in 2006.
4 He won four major trophies as a player at club level: a domestic cup double for Ajax in the 1997-98 season, KNVB Cup 1998-99 season and the Bundesliga title with Borussia Dortmund 2001–02.
5 He scored a with thunderbolt when he came on as a substitute in Julius Berger’s 1-0 win over Insurance of Benin at the Onikan stadium in 1989. Interestingly, it was his performance on that day that caught the eye of the Italian scouts in the stands. Those scouts, completesportsnigeria.com can report, were in Nigeria to watch Jide Oguntuase.
6 He became friends with Atlanta ’96 teammate Dosu Joseph after they faced each other in a Principals Cup game involving Igbobi College and Methodist High School in the 1980s. Dosu was in goal for Igbobi College while the Oliseh brothers Churchill (in goal) and Sunday starred for Methodist. The match ended 2-1.
7 He is blessed with one sister (Tessy) and three brothers Churchill, who owns FC Ebeidei; Azubuike and Egutu who are footballers. Tessy, is a designer and the creative genius behind Tesslo Concept. She is married to Ohimai Amaize.
8 He won Olympic football gold (1996), Africa Cup of Nations gold (1994), silver (2000) and bronze (2002) and played in two FIFA World Cups (1994 and 1998).
9 He was turned down when he applied as a coach with Ajax and Borussia Dortmund in 2013.
10 After missing out on 2002 World Cup in Korea and Japan, Oliseh retired from international football in June 2002 after 12 years with the national team. He made his debut for the three-time AFCON winners in a 6-0 win over Ethiopia.
