– Ricardo Quaresma scored in extra time to knock out Croatia out of Euro 2016
– Portugal will now face Poland at the quarter final stage
Portugal are through to next round of Euro 2016 with an extra time goal against Croatia in Lens as it ended 1-0. Ricardo Quaresma scored in the 117th minute with Portugal’s only shot on target after Ronaldo’s strike was saved but the veteran pounced on the rebound to put the Portuguese team through to the next stage. Quaresma also became the first player to score in extra time since Andre Arshavin did against the Netherlands in the 2008 edition of the European Championships.
The match was a cagey affair as both teams played with caution all through the match and there were no real threat in the final third.
Renato Sanches put up a man-of-the-match display as his skillful and muscular presence posed a threat to the Croatians after coming off the bench. Ivan Perisic could have finished off the game in abnormal time but his header came off the post and Domagoj Vida’s effort went wide which could have sent the to penalties. Despite their shaky start in Euro 2016, Portugal have now qualified for their sixth consecutive quarter-finals at the European Championships and will face Poland in Marsielle.
