THE kidnappers of ex-ExxonMobil staff and the Proprietor of Sure Foundation Polytechnic in Ukanafun Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Dr. Idongesit Udom, are insisting on N500 million for his release, urging the family to sell the institution to raise the money.
It has been 10 days since Dr. Udom was kidnapped on his way to church. A family source, who spoke to newsmen yesterday in Uyo, disclosed that the kidnappers made the demand of N500 million last Wednesday, three days after kidnapping their victim.
Our source, who did not want his name mentioned, added that even when the kidnappers contacted the family the third time last Sunday to find out when the ransom would be ready, they warned that they will not collect anything less than the N500 million.
According to the family member, the kidnappers are saying that they should go and sell the polytechnic to raise the ransom. The source said: “We met yesterday (Monday) to deliberate on the ransom, but we have not made them any offer yet because the amount they are demanding is outrageous.
“And when we asked them how they expect the family members to raise that kind of money, they said that we should go and sell the polytechnic.” Contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Chukwu Ikechukwu, who said he could not confirm the ransom, said: “The police are still working to ensure that he is released. I will get back to you as soon as I get information on that.”
