The app has more than 600 million users worldwide and is the biggest messaging service globally.

WhatsApp is understood to be carrying out a major update which will reportedly allow users to pin a message to the top of a chat.

The last time the app crashed was on New Year’s Eve.

At the time a spokesperson said: “Some people have had trouble accessing WhatsApp for a short period today.

“We’re working to restore service back to 100 per cent for everyone and we apologise for the inconvenience.”

WhatsApp was back up and running by about 11pm.
